More contraception not Mindanao solution, bishop tells gov’t

MALAYBALAY City, Bukidnon, Sept.29, 2014—A high-ranking church official slams the government for allegedly prioritizing the purchase of artificial contraceptives instead of coming out with programs that will improve the life of Filipinos in Mindanao.

“Use it [government funds] for poverty alleviation, for social justice agenda such as food and job security, land for the landless … to make it productive, and [for the] rehabilitation and recovery of typhoon victims,” said Malaybalay Bishop José A. Cabantan in a recent interview over Radyo Veritas.

According to him, artificial contraceptives pose a grave threat to the sanctity of the life in a mother’s womb.

The prelate suggested that the money rolled out for the acquisition of condoms and pills should be given rather to the subsidy of public school teachers, especially in in rural areas.

“Spend it on education … increase the teacher’s subsidy in our rural public school so [that] there will be no more exodus of our teachers every end of school year …. There are still so many social justice agenda that needs to be addressed than spending that budget for pills and condoms,” explained Cabanta.

The Department of Health (DOH) stated earlier that it will be giving away artificial contraceptives by November when full implementation of the controversial Reproductive Health (RH) Law is expected. (Raymond A. Sebastián)
